picking, choosing...

Because I'm childish and immature, when I heard today's Drawbridge topic of "pick and choose", this is the image that came to mind. I suppose the "choose" part comes in what he does next...

My Amazon widget is no more...

Eagle eyed readers of this blog will note that the "My Books" Amazon widget that listed my books that were available on Amazon, with links to buy them there, and which formerly resided on the right hand side of my page, is no more. For some time now it had been unable to retrieve information from Amazon due to some internal restructuring of the online shopping giant, so I deleted it.

My question is, to you savvy types who might see this, can anyone recommend a widget they're aware of that will replace my lost one? I 'd love to have a handy list of my published works and where to buy them, and would love even more not having to create something from scratch. Thanks in advance!

List Time on the Graphic NYC Blog-- My Top 5 Non-Comics Influences

Seth Kushner, the uber-talented photographer who took the above much-better-than-I-look-in-person photo of me, recently asked me to contribute a piece on my top 5 non-comics related influences for his Graphic NYC blog, to commemorate the imminent release of Zeus: King of the Gods. Click here to see what helped to make me into the twisted creature I am today.

Interview at Thick Mick's blog

Check out the recent interview I did at Thick Mick's Blog, also known as the blog of cartoonist John A. Walsh, a man with a name almost as Irish-sounding as my own. Visit to snicker at my windbaggyness, stay to check out some of John's sweet cartooning.

Two great tastes that taste great together. It's nothing to do with anything, but I thought I'd share regardless.

Earth 2100: The aftermath

So I hope everyone saw Earth 2100. Did we save the world? Head on over to the ABC official site and see clips and extra stuff, and wade through the sea of right-wing conspiracy buffs and bible thumping armageddonists to see what folks who were open to having their minds changed had to say.

Like the title says, Mr. Bob Woodruff plugging Earth 2100 on the Daily Show. I storyboarded that whole frog thing! I had to boil, like 3 dozen of them until I got the right poses.

Tune in tonight to see the whole show on ABC at 9pm!

The cat's out of the bag!

So for the past six months or so I've been working, on and off, on the animated segments of an upcoming ABC news program entitled "Earth 2100". I didn't tell many people, so as not to worry them with my excessive workload (it never got in the way of my other projects, I promise!) and also as not to jinx the project. Nothing's stopping it now, however, as it airs in ABC primetime next Tuesday, June 2nd, at 9 pm (and forever after in perpetuity on the History Channel).

I was lucky enough to storyboard this endeavor, and have many of my own illustrations actually become animated through the magic of Adobe After Effects. Click on the link above to check out a preview on Yahoo News of some of the work. I was joined in this endeavor by my studiomates Joe "Disco" Infurnari, Tim "Hambone" Hamilton, and Leland "The Purv" Purvis. It's a grim little cautionary tale of what awaits us in the coming century unless we act soon to counter some of the effects of climate change. FUN STUFF! That said, it will have some very nice pictures :-)

Three Shadows

Even though I've had this book for about a week, I only read it just  yesterday and I can't get it out of my head. I'm hesitant to give away too much of the plot: suffice it to say it concerns a family (dad Louis, mom Lise, and son Joachim) who live an idyllic existence in some unnamed land, until, one day, three mysterious figures (the titular shadows) appear on the periphery of their property. These figures evoke a sense of dread in the family, and soon it becomes apparent that they are there for little Joachim.
Cyril Pedrosa, the author and illustrator, worked on such Disney films as The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Hercules, and some of that is evident in his striking black-and-white artwork. If you're Disney-phobic, though, don't let that scare you off; there's not a cute fuzzy bunny or anthropomorphized animal in sight.  It' a beautifully illustrated book, and definitely worth multiple reads.

The Education of Hopey Glass

So, the other day, I dropped by the ol' Daily Bugle building (in reality, home to First Second Books) and afterwards, as I often will do, I poked my head into the nearby Forbidden Planet comic store. A pleasant surprise was awaiting me there in the form of a new collection/graphic novel by Jaime Hernandez.

This was really unexpected because I hadn't even heard of this one coming out. Jaime Hernandez is, in my opinion, one of the two best draftsmen working in comics today. His stories are maybe not everyone's cup of tea ( I have been positively evangelical in trying to get First Seconder's hooked, to no avail so far) but there's no denying the brilliance of his art and composition.  I recommend checking it out. Not for kids.
